A wife in distress. Li Yanting was outside a courthouse in Shenzhen, Guangdong province on Thursday (February 7). She just came out of her husband's appeal hearing against a 14-year sentence. Her husband, Wang Dengchao is a Shenzhen police officer. In November, he was convicted for embezzling and disrupting official business. His supporters say, though, these are trumped up charges. They say Wang is actually being punished for calling for democracy and trying to organize a union. [Lawyer Tang Jitian, Legal Team of Convicted Police Officer]:"Authorities, through one way or another, have already decided Wang Dengchao's fate. But they've covered up the real reason behind his case, and are using these fake charges against him." Li Yanting spoke with NTD after the hearing. She said the court repeatedly violated procedures, but the judge continued anyway. [Li Yanting, Wife of Convicted Police Officer]:"The lawyer wanted to answer the accusations, but the judge wouldn't allow them anytime to speak. My husband kept begging, and said, please give me three minutes to speak. I don't understand, he at least deserves a chance to make his argument, but he wasn't even allowed to speak." Wang's lawyers were forced to leave before the hearing ended. They said they could no longer fulfill their obligations to their client. Outside the hearing, Wang's supporters faced a contingent of police. The court will issue its judgment on a later date. For more news and videos visit ☛ http://ntd.tvFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C Wang Dengchao's troubles began last March.
